Addiction and Mental Health
Let us first define addiction. Addiction based to google is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.
How can we associate it with Mental Health?
Addiction is also considered as mental illness. Based to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) drug addiction can also be classified as mental illness due to addiction can affect our brains.
There are different kinds of addiction, it is not just about being dependent to a substance just like the definition of google, it can also be a thing or an activity. We can be addicted to anything, but the root cause can also be anything or something.
The most vulnerable time to be on the phase of addiction is in Adolescence, because this is the time that the number of our peers grows, and our environment is becoming larger. We start to know people who can contribute to our personality and behaviors, we start to go deeper on what reality and society looks like, that our parents never introduce to us, fearing, that without telling us those “adult” stuff will help us to be a good civilian that contributes to society.
Too much, is not good, and will not do good. Addiction maybe a result of different circumstances but teenager is vulnerable but those who are finding ways to get away from reality are also vulnerable in addiction and most of the time they are the ones who are hard to stop their addiction because it became their coping mechanism. This type of coping mechanism will eventually destroy them mentally and physically.
Its hard to stop addiction because realizing that you need to stop is not the end of everything, the body need to adjust again you need to control yourself on not doing the same things all over again, stopping addiction will make your depression worsen as you will go to withdrawal, but trusting the process and embracing the changes will help you to go through.
Yes addiction is also part of mental illness, one of the most common illnesses that we just bush off and still continue to be part of our everyday life’s. Pursuing Mental Health Awareness and believing that we can make changes will also help others that suffering to mental illnesses be bold and ask for help.
